Arsenal Legend and England International, Alan Smith
I remember when a raw teenage striker was called over to train with the first team. Our centre-halves, Tony Adams and Steve Bould, would go, ‘Oh no, not Kev!’ They knew that training that morning would be harder than usual, seeing as they’d have to contend with a quick and powerful prospect desperate to impress.
And Kev certainly did impress in the years that followed, helping us win the league in 1991 and then playing a big part in our cup successes of 93 and 94. In fact, that header at Highbury against Paris St Germain, seeing us through to the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final, was probably his most important in an Arsenal shirt.
We were all delighted for ‘Rambo’ that night because he was one of those characters everyone loved. Always positive and cheerful, it took a lot to remove that big, infectious grin. And he never forgot his route to the top, those days playing for the youth team under Pat Rice.
It’s an honour for me to become an ambassador for a charity set up to honour my great former teammate.
Discovering all the great humanitarian and community work that he was involved with fills me with pride, and it will be lovely to support The Kevin Campbell Foundation to grow and continue that work in Kevin’s name.
